My youngest child sat the KS2 English comprehension paper
this morning- it was made up of three separate texts. My child found it quite
tough- and harder than any mock paper that the school had set them (including the sample paper). Talking to
someone who has seen the paper today- they said it was hard, with many children
not finishing it on time. Time, it seems, was an issue for many who took this
test today. Further, whilst some questions contained complex wording, others expected
those taking the exam to infer things from the texts. It will be interesting to
see the questions later in the year when released to the public.
Looking through the blogs, discussion forums and even
newspapers- this has been a tough day for a lot of children. My thoughts are
that we should be trying to encourage our children to read more, to experience
the joy of reading and writing. We will not achieve this by hammering the
confidence of those children who struggle a little in this area- if anything
this will have the opposite impact.
It will be useful to see whether the maths paper on
Wednesday/Thursday is harder than the sample paper. Fingers crossed that it isn't!
